Choosing the right string quartet for your event

Let’s start with the music. Do you want classical, contemporary, or a little of both? With good musicians, you don't necessarily have to choose. Our string quartets can move from Bach, Mozart and Vivaldi to Ed Sheeran, Adele, film themes and modern songs arranged for strings with ease. Our style filters make it easy to narrow things down, then you can explore each quartet’s repertoire as you browse. Also keep in mind that many can source sheet music or create a bespoke arrangement for special requests, although there may be an additional charge.

Quartet, trio or duo?

For that rich, full string sound, start with the traditional quartet of two violins, viola and cello. For something more compact, a string trio or duo can work beautifully in smaller spaces and intimate ceremonies, as well as helping to keep costs down. Just remember that repertoire can vary between line-ups, so check that any must-have songs are available before booking.

Traditional string quartets usually perform acoustically without amplification, making it relatively easy for them to move between different parts of your venue. For added visual wow factor, or larger corporate events where amplification may be required, also see our electric string quartets.

Booking your wedding string quartet from ceremony to drinks reception

For weddings, a string quartet can play throughout your ceremony: as guests arrive, for your walk down the aisle, while you sign the register and for your recessional. Afterwards, your musicians can often move on to the drinks reception or wedding breakfast, changing the mood with lighter classical pieces and recognisable contemporary favourites.

String quartet options and prices

The average price for a string quartet wedding booking is currently £855, although your final price will depend on the number of musicians, performance time and travel. A simple ceremony booking might include around an hour of music, while drinks receptions, wedding breakfasts and corporate events are more commonly based around 2 x 60-minute or 3 x 40-minute sets, with breaks in between.

The average cost to hire a string quartet for a wedding or event in the UK is currently £855, with prices ranging from around £550 for a local string trio, to £3000 for a premium electric string show. Prices very depending on the experience of the musicians, the number of members, the length of performance, and travel costs.

Our average booking lead time for a string quartet is 6 months. Popular summer wedding dates can book up much earlier, particularly Saturdays - so it is worth checking availability once your date and venue are confirmed. If your event is coming up sooner, don't worry - we can often find good options at shorter notice.

Yes, providing the conditions are suitable. Acoustic string instruments need protection from rain, strong sunlight and extremes of temperature, so your quartet will normally need a dry, shaded or covered performance area on firm, level ground. It is also sensible to have an indoor backup space if the weather changes.

Most traditional string quartets perform acoustically and do not usually need amplification for a wedding ceremony, drinks reception or similar background setting. For a very large venue, outdoor event or noisier environment, extra amplification may be useful - and this is where an electric string quartet can be a useful choice. We can offer advice once we know your venue and guest numbers.

For a traditional four-piece quartet, allow roughly 3 metres by 2 metres of flat, dry space, with four suitable armless chairs and enough room for instruments, bows and music stands. Easy access and nearby parking are helpful, particularly for the cellist. Specific requirements are listed on each quartet's profile page.

They can be a great option as traditional quartets usually perform acoustically, so there is no amplified music pushing against a venue’s sound limiter. If your venue has particularly strict restrictions, tell us when you enquire and we can help you choose an appropriate act and setup.
